L-Carnitine acts as a carrier in the transport of activated long-chain fatty acids. It is thus an essential factor in the supply of energy to cells, mainly muscle. Moreover, its role in detoxifying excess intracellular acyl groups and in the production of metabolic energy from mediumchain fatty acids, pyruvate and ketone bodies, adds importance to it. L-Carninine also stimulates lipolysis and thermogenesis.
The use of L-Carnitine supplementation in fish diets in aquaculture has been advocated for multi functional purpose: as a growth promoter, specifically aiding in the utilization of high fat levels in the diet and thus providing a protein sparing effect; providing protection against toxic levels of ammonia and xenobiotics; alleviating stress related to water temperature extremes and facilitating better acclimation to water temperature changes.
